These waste products are called drusen. Age is a prime reason many patients are diagnosed with the disease. Other risk factors include such things as family history, light hair and eyes, smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Besides age, the greatest risk factor for macular degeneration is smoking. Smoking also leads to the worsening of macular degeneration. In dry macular degeneration there are two main types. First, there is degenerative macular degeneration. Second, there is geographic atrophy. If you have geographic atrophy, please refer to the appropriate pamphlet with further information on the disease. For early and intermediate dry macular degeneration, it is recommended that patients take AREDs 2 vitamins.
