Wet macular degeneration is a disease of the macula where new blood vessels grow underneath the retina. These new blood vessels grow because there are waste products underneath the retina and the body is trying to “heal” and remove those waste products. Wet macular degeneration has converted from dry macular degeneration where blood vessels can bleed, swell, and leak, resulting in a loss of vision. Photoreceptors are damaged by the fluid and blood that come from the new blood vessels. This condition is commonly referred to as choroidal neovascularization.
